Abuse Indicators: How to Know if Someone is in Danger

The effects of abuse, whether physical or emotional, are widespread and at times barely distinguishable. Being vigilant and noting gradual, or sudden changes in someone’s behavior is often the first step in prevention.

    • Has the person distanced/isolated from friends, family etc.?
    • Is the person unduly concerned with the opinion of a partner?
    • Does the person seek consent from his/her partner about menial activities?
    • Does the person have control over spending his/her own money?
    • Have you noticed repeated unexplained injuries?
    • Have you heard repeated arguing and sounds of an altercation?
    • Has the person been degraded by his/her partner in front of others?

If you or anyone you know is exhibiting these signs, please urge the person to seek help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is open 24/7 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788
